the old heart of Seoul: palaces, hanok lanes, some of the best museums
Tiled hanok roofs and palace walls, on lanes that climb the hill — this is old Seoul, and its gallery district, with several of the country's big museums clustered around Anguk. Yes it's touristy; step one lane off the main drag and that stops mattering. First time in Korea, this is the one to start with.
No photos, no star ratings — just what I'd tell a friend. I live in Seoul and

Seoul's most tourist-famous hanok cafe; the bread's genuinely good, but I usually slip somewhere nearby.
Getting in: By Anguk exit 3. It's genuinely pretty, but touristy and usually a wait — weekday mornings and evenings are calmer. Weekdays 7am–10pm, weekends from 9.

프릳츠 원서점 · inside the Arario Museum
One of those Korean coffee names you can just trust — set in a hanok inside the Arario Museum.
What to get: drip coffee and any pastry; the bread's all good.
Getting in: The courtyard's the move — grab a seat out by the old stone pagoda; it's roomy, so you'll rarely wait. Open till 7:30pm.

블루보틀 삼청 · by MMCA
Not a sit-and-stay, but the handiest caffeine hit while doing MMCA or Samcheong shopping.
What to get: a quick coffee to go, not a sit-down.
Getting in: Three floors: order on 1, pick up on 2, and the seats are up on 2 and 3 — scarce, and it's always packed. Daily, 9am–8pm.

부빙 · Bukchon-ro 7-gil
One of Seoul's better bingsu (shaved ice), photogenic and genuinely good, though the flavor splits people.
What to get: the patbingsu (red-bean); that's the whole point.
Getting in: There's a second Bubing up in Buam-dong — this is the Bukchon one, on Bukchon-ro 7-gil. Walk-in, no booking; it's small and summer afternoons get busy — when there's a line, join it on CatchTable (캐치테이블) remote waiting. Opens 1pm; closed Mondays.

Haven't been, but I hear the tea house has a rooftop over Gyeongbokgung, calm and properly Korean.
What to get: if you go, the 1F tea house for a Korean tea, then up to the rooftop over the palace.
Getting in: The 1F tea house is walk-in; the tea course needs a Naver booking ahead. 10am–6pm (last order 5:30), closed Tuesdays. Head up to the rooftop for the palace view.

Getting in: It's in the B1 of the Union Building, easy to walk past. Stone-oven bakes; brunch too. Opens 10:30, open daily, fills right after lunch.

What to get: the bread; that's what they're known for.

The office crowd's bossam (boiled pork wraps) lunch: tender pork, sharp kimchi, a generous spread.
What to get: the bossam jeongsik (set) — bossam, kimchi, doenjang stew, banchan, and ssam to wrap.
Getting in: Office rush 11:30–1 is packed; after 1 it eases. Mind the 3:30–5pm break, and it's closed the 4th Sunday. Anguk exit 3, about 7 min. Walk in or reserve.

법원 (beobwon) is a pun on bourbon; they pour Korean whisky and bourbon, plus dessert, and it's loud.

Getting in: Walk in, or book a table on Naver Monday to Thursday; no bookings Fri–Sun, so weekends can mean a wait. Two floors. Daily 2pm–1am.

Hand-made dumplings and gentle noodle soups, the kind of lunch that sits easy on the stomach.
What to get: mandu-guk (dumpling soup) or kal-mandu (noodles + dumplings); the cold soy-milk kongguksu in summer.
Getting in: Office-lunch hotspot — 11:30am–1pm you'll always wait: write your name on the list at the door and stay right there. Mind the 2:40–5pm weekday break; closed Sundays. On Gyedong-gil.

Started the Korean bagel craze, and the line still shows it; the other branches are far easier.
Getting in: Opens 7am and the line starts before that; even CatchTable (캐치테이블) waiting fills fast at open. If you just want the bagels, the Dosan or Jamsil branches are far easier.

A humble local table: barley or gondeure (herb) rice, seasoned namul, and bibimbap.
What to get: the woorimil barley rice or gondeure rice (both have a two-portion minimum, but a solo diner can ask for one); the minari (water-parsley) jeon (savory pancake) — it has shrimp, so vegetarians get the potato jeon.
Getting in: Small room, packed at office lunch — get there at the 11:15 open, or after 1pm once that rush is over. Break 3–5pm, closed Sundays. Anguk exit 3.

Getting in: Opens early, 8am-7pm, and stays roomy — a calm, from-scratch start when few places in Seoul do breakfast. No added sugar. Anguk exit 2, about 5 min.

Busan's pork soup rebuilt as something herbal and bright; the Bib Gourmand brought the line with it.
What to get: the dwaeji-gukbap (pork soup), herb oil already in the bowl, and a side of the jeyuk: thin-sliced pork you roll around cilantro and shallot, lime squeezed over.
Getting in: Bib Gourmand, so expect about an hour's wait — get on Tabling (테이블링) remote waiting. Opens 11:30, 3–5pm break Mon–Wed, can sell out early.

Chicken or perilla-oil kalguksu (soy-milk noodles in summer), none of it spicy: noodles that never lose a foreign friend.
What to get: the deulgireum (perilla-oil) kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), or the dak (chicken); none spicy, so add the spicy dak-muchim if you want heat.
Getting in: Up on the 2nd floor, so look up. 11am-8pm with no break, closed Mondays; it relocated from Bundang. Walk-in.

Bukchon's hipster-favorite cafe — tiny, but every drink and dessert lands, cozier than it looks.
What to get: the banana pudding, or really any drink or dessert — none of it misses.
Getting in: Opens noon, closes 6–8pm, so mornings you'll find it shut; closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Only four tables with a 90-minute cap — expect a wait for a seat. Hours wobble; check their Instagram.

A tteok (rice cake) shop open since 1949. Grab the royal dutteok, or anything, as you pass through Bukchon.
What to get: the dutteok (the royal rice cake) — though every kind is good. Takeout only.
Getting in: Not a sit-down — buy as you pass. Open till 5pm, but they sell out and close early, so don't leave it late. Made fresh daily.

One of Seoul's best North-Korean mandu houses: dumplings in a clean broth, and a fierce queue to match.
What to get: kalmandu (noodles + dumplings) or son-mandu-guk (dumplings only); the jorang-tteok mandu-guk (with gourd-shaped rice cakes) and bibim-guksu are good too.
Getting in: Year-round queue. The move: get on CatchTable (캐치테이블) the second they open, then wander till your turn — you pick your dishes when you register, no changes after. Closed Sundays; weekday break 3:30–5.

London Bagel Museum's salt-bread spin-off, well-branded and tasty; usually a line, so I go nearby.
Getting in: On CatchTable (캐치테이블), pick 포장/takeout — far shorter than the dine-in wait. If the takeout line's short, grab a salt bread; if it's the usual long line, get one elsewhere. Open 7:30am–8pm.

Korea's first public craft museum: free, new in 2021, and worth it for the grounds alone.
What to get: the permanent craft collection — and the buildings and courtyard, which are half the reason to come.
Getting in: Free, and right by Anguk — easy to fold into a gallery afternoon. Closed Mondays; open 10–6. Just walk the grounds if nothing grabs you; check the site for any special-exhibition booking.

Korea's best photography bookstore: a calm, carefully kept room of photobooks, rare and new.
What to get: the photography books — Korean and international, the deepest selection in the country.
Getting in: Open 1–7pm, closed Sundays and Mondays — a deliberate stop, not a walk-by. It moved here from Seochon; 1st floor on Bukchon-ro 1-gil, with Incomplete Table in the basement.

Pick this over Gyeongbokgung. The Huwon garden is the reason, and it's a timed tour you book ahead.

What to get: the Daeonsil greenhouse and Chundangji pond; you can walk over from Changdeokgung, so pair the two for a half-day.
Getting in: 9am-9pm (last entry 8), closed Mon. Come in by the main gate, Honghwamun, on Changgyeonggung-ro, with just a Changgyeonggung ticket. From inside Changdeokgung, you can also cross at Hamyangmun and buy one at the booth there until 5pm (5:30 in summer, 4:30 in winter). Open late; dusk is nice for the lit greenhouse.

Michelin-listed and genuinely good. But it's a long climb north, and I'd rather eat my noodles closer in.
Getting in: Up near the top of Samcheong-ro, past the galleries — a real uphill from Anguk, and a long way to come just for a bowl of sujebi.

Bukchon Hanok Village
북촌한옥마을 · up from Anguk
The postcard hanok lane, and always packed. Still, if you're in Bukchon, walk up — the rooftop view earns it.
What to get: walk up Bukchon-ro 11-gil for tiled roofs stacked below the skyline. People live here, so keep it quiet; the lane closes to visitors at 5pm.
Getting in: A short climb from Anguk exit 2. Worst at midday and on weekends; right at the 10am opening is the calm window.
